Reviews and Compilation

Many may want to know what the difference is between a review and a compilation in accordance with Statements on Standards for Accounting and Review Services. If an audit is not required, a review or compilation may meet your needs. These are less in scope and result in lower fees than an audit.


A review can be an alternative source than an audit to meet the requirements of third-party agencies (such as bonding companies, lenders). When performing a review, PHG can provide limited assurance as a basis for reporting about whether we are aware if a client’s financial statements need material modifications to be in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles.

In doing so, we apply a variety of diagnostic tools, including analytical procedures, inquiries of management and various general ledger analyses which may present unusual or misaligned information compared to applicable industry benchmark amounts and requires further explanations.


A compilation involves applying accounting and financial reporting expertise to assist clients in assembling data from their records and presenting such information in an appropriate financial statement format. We are not required to make inquiries and perform other procedures to verify the accuracy or completeness of the information provided by the client. For certain businesses, this service and related work product may be sufficient enough to meet their needs as well as those of third party agencies.
